RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION
OF THE AWARDED BOOKS 2008-2013
ROSA BRUX

Back from a series of exhibitions and events in Switzerland, the books awarded by the Fernand Baudin Prize will be exhibited at Rosa Brux in Brussels, in a retrospective show presenting all the awarded books since 2008 and until today.

Along with the books, the exhibition will present new versions of wooden crates bookshelves that the Bibliothèque Pour Tous* (Library for All) was using at the begining of last Century to spread its books through the whole Switzerland, by cart and on donkeys’ back.

The plans of these mobile bookshleves—means of transport as well as display for the books—will be published under an open source license and distributed during the show. (design: Mathieu Gabiot & Loraine Furter)

Fernand Baudin (1918-2005) is a Belgian book designer, or “typographiste” as he likes to call himself. Baudin was an author, teacher and lecturer, active in organisations like the Rencontres de Lure and Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI). Next to an extensive correspondence with international designers of his time (Stanley Morison, Gerrit Noordzij, John Dreyfus… among many others), Fernand Baudin is the author of the books How Typography Works (and why it is important) and The Gutenberg Effect, and has written essays in Belgian and international periodicals (Arts et techniques graphiques, Cahiers GUTenberg, Letterletter, Visible Language) about typography and design.
Loraine Furter, coordinator of the Fernand Baudin Prize will focus on a recurring topic in Baudins work: the evolution of writing and designing tools and their influence on communication and culture.

The Fernand Baudin Prize – Prize for the Most Beautiful Books in Brussels and Wallonia – consists of a special recognition that is given to those books which demonstrate an outstanding quality both in their conception (editorial and graphic) as in their production (printing and binding). The 56 awarded books since 2008 constitute a collection of forms – binding, papers, inks, rasters, typefaces, layout and compositions. La Villa Hermosa and the Fernand Baudin Prize propose to shift the point of view on this selection with an installation for Design September 2014. La Villa Hermosa is a space for creation, print and exhibition. Alongside their graphic design activities, the members of La Villa Hermosa created a platform for exchanges and collaboration in order to develop experimentation projects, halfway between art and graphic mediation.

Jury 2014

The Jury for the Fernand Baudin Prize 2014 will take place on the 10th and 11th of March at INSAS, national movie and theater school in Brussels.

It is with great pleasure that we present you the jury members of this edition:

Mette Edvardsen (president), norwegian artist based in Bruxelles, whose performances “every now and then” and “Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine” set a specific relation to the book, its space, its transmission — at the same time intimate and shared. Living books.

Michel Defourny, specialist of children books, and founder of the Children Literature Center of Liège.

Sonia Dermience, founder of the curatorial collective Komplot in Brussels, which publishes the magazine Year and co-organises the annual art book fair Artists Prints in Brussels.

Catherine Guiral, bringing together design practice, research and theory — but also books and/in movies. Currently researcher at the Royal College of Art and working on the French graphic designer Pierre Faucheux whose long career spans the Trente Glorieuses and revisits the form of the book.

Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson, norwegian artist based in Oslo, working on books, photography, installations, and often the three together.

Benjamin Monti, artist working at the crossroads of text and drawing, active in the sphere of fanzine (Mycose), and as a bookseller in Liège, at le comptoir du livre, bookshop aiming at “bibliodiversity”.

Rick Poynor, theoretician of graphic design, typography and visual culture. Amongst others founder of the Eye magazine and co-founder of the blog Design Observer, Rick Poynor taught at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and at Royal College of Art in London, where he is currently a researcher.

Kristien Van den Brande, dramaturg, member of the artistic team of Sarma, laboratory for criticism, dramaturgy, research and creation in contemporary dance, recently involved in a workshop on the links between reading and (collective) memory in Casco, Utrecht.

23/12/2013

The registration of books published during the year 2013 is now closed. More on the jury coming soon!

The Fernand Baudin Prize awards the Most Beautiful Books in Brussels and Wallonia and is open for all book categories.

Jury

In March 2014 an independent, international jury of book professionals will judge the eligible book entries. The criteria of selection take into account all components of the book bearing in mind their appropriateness with the content of the work, the quality of the book production and remarkable or innovating aspects of the edition.

Goal

By honouring the Most Beautiful Books, the Fernand Baudin Prize wants to support and encourage the contemporary book production in Brussels and Wallonia. Through an exhibition and a catalogue, which are distributed abroad, we hope to bring this creative industry and its production to the notice of a wider, international public.
